Well 2002 was disappointing from a team standpoint but the Tailgate has risen to it's highest level ever.  I will be ever grateful for the additions of Monty, Karen, Al, Lisa, Robin, Lou, Laureen, Larry as regular conspirators to the tailgate process.  We have many additional regulars such as Darren, Miguel, Hank and a host of visiting fans.  The bottom line is we now have ensured the finest quality company for each tailgate.  The team had a few major let downs (New York Jets, Green Bay Packers and the Denver Broncos) but our tailgate was strong and well enjoyed each week.  As always my biggest thanks must go to those who attend with me each week as my guest.  Thank you for another great season of memories as we look forward to 2003 - The Champions Return!

Pic O' the 'Week'

We've found our new lot home and it has all the luxury of the original!  Join us!

Current Tailgate:

Each week I will include a short review of the festivities which comprise our enjoyment of the entire experience.  These sections will be more significant for the home games at which we'll have our Foxboro Faithful gather at the new Digs of Gillette Stadium.  There will be a small section for each away game for which I shall continue to host a gathering at my home.

Also - please visit a fantastic partner site: Mrs. B's Tailgate!

August 7: New York Giants (Pre-Season)

Coach took the first game of the 03 campaign and his efforts were rewarded with more challenge than usual.  The newly sold lot was restrictive and the steady drizzle was challenging.  Not as challenging as this unusual glimpse of travel challenge which shows a mouse somehow stuck on the roof of a car on route 128/95!

hwymouse.jpg (91516 bytes)

If that wasn't enough our group was dispersed throughout the lot and surprisingly it was the first arrival of the Canadian (ah Canadian Beer!) Celebrity Cecil.

cecil.jpg (144023 bytes)

How he beat the rest of the crew is a mystery but he did get the first glimpse of Tedy's tailgate well wish picture which hangs in the background.

No Tailgate home or Away as Zip was on the road from Pennsic!

August 22: at Philadelphia Eagles (Pre-Season)

Zip and Jim (Dawg) catch a quiet viewing in the nearly complete addition - no Tailgate.

August 27: Chicago Bears (Pre-Season)

Gene made his return solid after a few year's hiatus.  He brought a pair of Michelle's with him to help conspire for a grandiose setting despite the challenge of a Wednesday night pre-season match.

The trio had finished off a fine song as well and the performance was well worth the effort:

Patriots Rhapsody lyrics:
I see a little silhouetto of a Bear
Kordell Stewart, Kordell Stewart, will be crushed in a tackle,
Brady and Ward very very frightening me!
Kordell Stewart, Kordell Stewart, Will we let him throw?
I'm just a new bear, nobody loves me,
He's just a QB, very short on TD's,
Spare him his life from this montsrosity.
Easy Come, easy go, will you let me throw?
Pat's Defense! No, we will not let you throw!
(Let him throw) Pat's Defense, will not let you throw (x3)
Mama Mia, Mama Mia
Ted Bruschi, has a tackle put aside for me, for me, for me!

Finally into the game where we find Ostend eager to overlook his domain!

September 21: New York Jets
tailgatesetup.JPG (182187 bytes) This auspicious game was spearheaded by David "Charts" Chartier and included the always enjoyable crew from JetsInsider.com making their annual pilgrimage to Foxboro.  It also featured the first union of the Canopy Trio and the mass destruction of our usual lot.  The flags waved all the more fiercely over the now exposed hillside which was once our secreted hideaway!

Now with Zip's Broken limbs this was the first game without Ostend since the Pooch arrived in 2000.  The lot was in turmoil so our group opted to meet early to test the Coffee Waters and line up for lot arrival.  The lot was smooth however and granted us our spot - albeit barren and desolate of trees and rife with construction equipment.  It did however open up a fine view of the stadium and certainly didn't dampen any spirits.

Dreaming of Oz?

I truly can't thank Charts enough for shouldering the extra burden whilst I was a bit more out of commission than normal.  Of course he did have Mrs. B, Sleuth, Monty, Lisa, Dana and Robin eager to leap to the fray as well.  Joel and his Dad even joined us as did the Paxton (as in Lonnie) contingent and all were well aware of what I already knew: Dave Charts Chartier is a fine master of the tailgate and a pretty damn good friend as well - especially in the post-victory tailgate!

Our guests from 16H joined us for the pre-game Jello shot toast as well as a fair bit of food and drink!  "To fine weather, fine people and a love of our teams!" jelloshots.JPG (214967 bytes)
group.JPG (238357 bytes) All in all we made for quite a motley crew of Football fanatics demonstrating the right way to tailgate on a perfect autumn day.

There was a game of course which will be discussed in the other pages but from the fun perspective of a tailgate crew, it was a perfect day.  The Pats finally beat the Jets in Foxboro and though it wasn't a pretty game it was a gritty game and enjoyable.  The Pats rise to 2-1 for a three way tie in the AFC-East.  The downside was the continued rash of injuries but Rooks stepped up on this day and hopefully will do so until the returns can begin.  Go Pats!

October 5: Tennessee Titans

Remember the Titans?  New England certainly did as we enjoyed an astounding fall afternoon.  Our morning crew met for the final time at Dunkin Donuts to ensure we were on the same parking page with the many changes to our lot!  It says something about our fanaticism to have Zip, Rick, Karen, Al, Rick 2, Rick 3, Monty, Bama, Lisa, Dana, Dave & Rhonda all rendezvous at 8:30 on a Sunday morning just to ensure we stay connected.  Ok - I was holding a pair of tickets but the others are all as sick as Zip and Ostend in their loyalties!  This did pay dividends as we quickly found and confiscated a section of the lot which is ideal for our crew and for which we are grateful to the tolerance and adjustment of our new tailgate neighbors.  We'll miss Social and his crew but it looks like there's a fine addition next to us.  We certainly held 'court' for a large group of Pats fans at our new locale:

As you can see we managed quite the crew of folks with visitors from Alabama and Florida as well as our standard New England fare which includes the long traveled and highly devoted Larry & Laureen from Jersey as well as Robin and Lou from the far reaches of southern CT.

Our own tailgate preparations had been begun the night before as Rick ushered in October in grand style with considerable help from his wife Monique.  All the tailgate learned the splendor of her Stuffed Pumpkin and Tailgate Apple Crisp!  The demand for the recipe was high and thus here it is:

Monique's Stuffed Pumpkin.

The seasons are an estimate as I never measure and you should make it to your own taste.  It is
far more likely that you will under season rather than over season, so use a free hand.

1 medium size pumpkin, cut the top off and scoop out all seeds
1 1/2 lbs of hamburger (75% lean is good, don't use real lean)
1 1/2 lbs of ground pork
Bell seasoning (approx 1/4 of the box, start with a bit less and taste away)
salt and pepper (1 tsp to 1 tbl salt and generous shake of pepper)
poultry seasoning, 1/2 tsp
ground cinnamon, 1/2 tsp
ground gloves, 1/2 tsp
1 - 1 1/2 cup instant potatoes (add to absorb all grease, until meat starts to clump together)

Brown all meat, you can do it in batches but do not drain off grease.  Transfer to a large pot and add seasonings and potato flakes. Simmer for 15-30 minutes stirring occasionally.  Add seasonings to taste and transfer to pumpkin.

Cook at 350 for approximately 3 1/2 hours.  Use a baking dish that has high walls to support the pumpkin, approx. 1/3 of 1/2 up the side of the pumpkin.  If you have extra stuffing, it makes a great side dish with poultry too.

Enjoy!

rickzip.jpg (152629 bytes) Now there are a host of cool pictures I'd love to share - sadly we had some disk destruction take place and only three files were saved.  The Group picture already shown and two others of some high value.  My Brother Rick brought us the tailgate this week and followed in the Sainthood of David Chartier by handling much loading and unloading while my wrist and ankle continued to heal.  I can't sufficiently demonstrate my appreciation but I'm told we have a good picture of we Brothers.

So there we were basking in beautiful weather which may have had a nip of chill but was quickly warmed by the plethora of food and spirits available at the Tailgae.  Sam Adam's Octoberfest sustained the October theme but couldn't entirely replace the several Bruschi Brew 8 elixirs which flowed as well.  Dana and Lisa had their morning round of breakfast to tempt the crowds while the Cardozan Chilli came to temperature.  Monty's swordfish and many other dishes tempted the palates of our diverse group.  Darren, Robin, Lou, Larry and Laureen soon arrived to completet he group of regulars.  Many visitors stopped by to espouse their theories on Patriot victories all the while laughter and joviality rang through.  For those who have yet to find the opportunity to share our victuals and hospitality as well as the splendor of a Patriot Game Day experience, fall is passing so get yourselves in order quickly.  The Winter experience is astounding but definitely different.  For one thing the weekly Jello-shots are in far higher danger of freezing - unless made by Laureen as those things oddly seem to never freeze...hmmmmm.

karenzip.jpg (210171 bytes) The final picture for this tailgate is of Karen, Ostend and myself as we enjoy the fine afternoon.  The tailgates have always been a great experience for me but they became a group of regular friends making a real splash in the Foxboro tailgate world when Karen and Al joined the tailgate and began enticing everyone else to join us regularly.  So it's fitting to end with a picture of the two friends who got it started.

Tailgate Details

Each and every home game, I have the fortune of joining/entreating a different friend (yeah Everyone's your friend when you have the Pats tickets!) to accompany me for the journey. This long standing tradition has become somewhat of a competition to make our trip together the best experience possible. Although the emphasis is completely on our enjoyment, there is a rating system that I use to score the day and use this for determining who picks their game first on the following year. I also use this to determine who accompanies me to the home playoff games....and Superbowls!

I almost always park in the same location and as we do place such significant emphasis on fun and enjoyment, I hope to encourage many of you to join us at least once throughout the season to fully appreciate Patriots Game Day entertainment! We park directly across Route 1 from the old Stadium and Pro-Shop.  It is a satellite lot just south of Rodman Ford - it is the lot behind the Souvenir stand (Beantown Sports Collectibles - a physical building). In the far back right corner of that lot atop the hill. You'll see our white canopy and Pats Banner  (54 Full Tilt - Full Time) and Pendants flying. Stop by and say hello!

Tailgate Directions

STOP the Presses!  - NEW Location - Same Lot but new Location!!
Those of you new or experienced at our lot should be forewarned the lot has been sold and major renovations are currently in the works.  All the trees are removed, the path has been laid bare and as such the below directions have now been updated.

We have grown as a Tailgate over the last few years and may now be clearly identified from the trio of Canopies which hold the Blue "54 Full Tilt Full Time" banner and the ever present flags!

group.jpg (274852 bytes) Here is a quick look at our new digs in their proper location: lotleft03.jpg (104367 bytes)
Let's give you the clear overview:  We park in the lot directly across Route 1 from the old stadium which is at the crest of the hill on Route 1.  The entrance to the lot is a few 100 feet south of the hill crest on route 1  It is lot P10 and has the signage noted to the right here. lotsign03.jpg (69688 bytes)
Directly across Route 1 on the Stadium side you'll see this sign which is NOT our lot but is an excellent landmark. xlotsign03.jpg (49132 bytes)

Having provided you the actual lot details, let's ensure you have the correct driving approach:   Assuming that you are getting to the Stadium by Route 1, there are simply two choices:   Route 1 Heading North or Route 1 Heading South.  I recommend heading South as it's simply a right hand turn but it is possible to do it either way!

Heading North on Route 1: The last lot on your left before you pass the crest of the hill.   You will clearly see the Stadium on your right and our lot is on the left - note the signs above for clarity!

Heading South on Route 1:  Route 1 will split such that the south bound lane dips down enabling traffic to pass under the North bound lanes and into the stadium.  You are very close so stay to the right.  As you go back up the hill the lanes merge into two-way traffic again.  At this point you should watch for the lot entrance at the top of the hill.  It is labeled P10 as shown above!

So after having gotten yourself into that lot, you now need to find our exact location.  As you enter the lot you are turning perpendicular from route 1.  The lot pattern currently forces you to go ahead a bit, turn 90 degrees to the right and follow a roped area forward to a pay booth.  In this you should get to the left most lane.  After the pay booth you are going to turn completely around in a U-turn heading back towards the entrance but outside the roped area.  Our parking spot is all the way to the wood-line and slightly to the left.  Again simply seek out the canopy and sign conglomerate!

Go Pats and welcome to the Tailgate!  Questions?  Send me an email!

Cleveland Browns
Only time I'm against the Pats during the season is when they face my beloved Browns.  So I will sacrifice my top Dawg position amongst you for this coming season and join Zip for the Cleveland game as he predicted.  Fun for me but not so much for you when
the Pats lose.

I shall select (insert drum roll here)... the 12/7 Miami Dolphin game. Now if dolphins really are as smart as people claim then they will choose to forfeit the game and avoid the humiliation we will deliver to them. Short of that, they will justly receive a bombing on Pearl Harbor Day!
