Patriots Draft '03
|
| Last Update: 5/4/03 |
The Patriots 2003 Draft included the addition of 10 players and
a host of trades as the club maneuvered very well by the accounts of most
experts.
The Best Resource I have found for Draft Preparation: Miguel's Draft Links
has now departed although much of Miguel's fine work can be found at Patsfans!
There are of course many outstanding links throughout the world wide web.

Patriot Needs
Free Agency Impacts these needs and thus it is an active adjustment
throughout this period.
Defensive Tackle - The Steve Martin failure leaves us with the largest need
at the Defensive Tackle Position. The draft is also deep in this position
- expect a first round selection
Defensive End - The Patriots are old and slow on the outside of their
line. Hamilton can work at one end but the Pleasant/Lyle experiment failed
and the anemic pass rush needs a desperate boost. Expect a first round
selection.
Linebacker - Aging and a bit slower than optimum, the Patriots need to
enhance this unit with quality youth not career backups. A better line
improves this unit but the Katzenmoyer failure still haunts the team.
Left Tackle - Matt Light was routinely and severely beaten by speed
rushers. He would better suit a Guard position if the Patriots could find
a quality Left Tackle. Klemm may be an answer but that is a long shot at
present.
Running Back - Antowain Smith seemed to lose significant speed which
impacted the Patriots. When his O-line outran him during a screen in
Tennessee while Henry Ford, a 300+ pound Tackle, caught him from behind, it was
clear the problem needed addressing.
Wide Receiver - The failure of Donald Hayes creates a need for a
quality receiver. Patten's bad year augmented this but more importantly a
style change from the Brown/Patten/Branch mold. Ideally a stretch the
field style of receiver with some size.
Cornerback - Otis is aging and showed a bit of it this season.
Myers did not earn the confidence such as to prevent this from being a
need. If top quality is available, this pick could supplant a higher
need. There certainly needs to be some movement at this position.
Right Guard - Andruzzi's health and Compton's age and slowing make
this position a need. Moving Light reduces this need but the Patriots
depth here is non-existent.
Free Safety - Tebucky fills this need if he stays but as a Franchise
Tag his future remains uncertain. If the Pats do not move a player to this
position, they need to find or draft one.

Patriot Picks:
| Round/Pick |
Position |
Player |
Comments |
| 1/13 |
DT |
Ty Warren |
A hard run on the DT position forced the Patriots to move up to get
this player. Still he is well suited to there needs and can play the
two-gap system he'll likely experience frequently. A solid choice
and addition since the cream of the crop was already taken. Very
likely he will be a primary starter this season. |
| 2/4 (36) |
CB |
Eugene Wilson |
An excellent selection and possibly the best zone cornerback in the
draft. Possibly a first rounder on many boards he fell to the second
round and was a very good selection. Should challenge to start this
season. |
| 2/13 (45) |
WR |
Bethel Johnson |
The final selection of the first day is an exceedingly fast receiver
with high upside but may have been a bit of a reach. He has
potential but vastly in the Deion Branch mold which makes it a mysterious
selection. |
| 4/20 (117) |
NT |
Dan Klecko |
An over-achieving Full Tilt Full Time (tm) player who will raise the
intensity at practice and workouts with an outside chance to earn the nose
tackle position as a starter. An outstanding pick at this point in the
draft. |
| 4/23 (120) |
CB |
Asante Samuel |
Having already drafted a high quality corner, this pick was a bit
suspect. He has potential to challenge for a roster position but it
will be a hard road. |
| 5/29 (164) |
C |
Dan Koppen |
Another outstanding pick who is a competent center with the ability
to play other positions on the line. He'll replace Reugamer on the
roster and may challenge for more reps if the team desires to move Woody
to another line position. |
| 6/28 (201) |
QB |
Kliff Kingsbury |
This is the one year development project to replace Davey when Davey
replaces Huard next year. Huard's salary balloons and a third
quarterback will be needed, Kingsbury is very similar to Brady and should
fit the system well. Still the need was low and other needs do
exist. An acceptable risk at this point in the draft. |
| 7/20 (234) |
TE |
Spencer Nead |
A very capable receiving tight end, this organization has put far
too much effort into the TE position. Our fourth drafted tight end
in three years surprises even more since we pursue it in free agency as
well. Will be challenged to find a Roster Spot but may be a practice
squad player. |
| 7/25 (239) |
DE |
Tully Banta-Cain |
Astounding this value fell this low. He is a legitimate NFL
player and could develop as an eventual starter at DE or possibly MLB (in
the 3-4) where he has some experience. At either position he is
likely to earn a roster spot this season. |
| 7/29 (243) |
NT |
Ethan Kelley |
This far into the draft you are hoping for surprises. Kelley
adds DT depth with NT ability. He is a long shot for a roster spot
but with the youth movement on the line he'll be in a hard working and
competitive battle which may raise his performance enough. Nothing
special in this pick but nothing awry either. |

Round 6 (193) |
Acceptable Move at a reasonable price. We could not

Round 1 [2004 Draft]

This is a horrible trade and I'm stunned the Patriots would
do such. The only truly bad trade of the day which I hope is

| Round 2 (45) |
Carolina Panthers |
Round 2 (50)
Round 4 (120) |
I'm not sure Johnson was worth the loss of the 4th round

| Round 4 (120) |
Denver Broncos |
Round 4 (128)
Round 5 (157) |
Here is that round 4 pick back to us and this time to get
Day 2 started with a solid player who fit a need and fell nicely to us
there. |
Round 5 (164)
Round 6 (201)
Round 7 (243) |
Tennessee Titans |
Round 5 (154)
Round 7 (225) |
Another in a long series of good moves by the Patriots on
draft day. These picks aren't just wasted effort as they produced
quality picks with high potential (Koppen in this case). |
Zip's Evaluation:
I had the misfortune to miss the entire draft and thus my review was made by
looking through the final results. Despite this my initial reaction was
disappointment for the lack of the most solid notables in the early
rounds. The bigger named players from pre-draft evaluation did not appear
on the Patriot list. As the sequence of selections was more closely
scrutinized along with the fit of the player to the system, my review
improved. When the additional selections for next season's draft were
included the ultimate grade was a solid performance by the team.
It still seems they missed opportunities to fill some holes while adding
players of questionable need and value such as Kingsbury and Nead. Still
they filled several voids well and brought in some high potential players.
Given their free agent moves and the draft setup for next year, they accommodated
themselves quite well. The bottom line is it seems this year the Patriots
are improved from last season which is a very admirable result.
